ROEDIGER FAMILY

ROEDIGER FAMILY DESCENDANTS

(1) Maria Dorothea Roediger was born 14 March 1818 in Hackpfüffel, District of Sangerhausen, Germany.

NOTE: During a visit to Germany in September 2009, we finally came face to face with the much discussed and researched village of Hackpfüffel, and what a wonderful feeling it was to see the sign proclaiming that yes, we were in the right place! Many thanks to our hosts Detlef and Uta for making the experience possible.

The village of Hackpfüffel today appeared to be a fairly poor area, and as with many parts of the old East Germany that we visited, restoration and progress can be seen side by side with run-down and dilapidated properties.

Following are photos taken that day:

Hackpfüffel Church

Ruined part of building between front of church and tower

Central part of ruin showing doorway into restored area

Doorway into restored area

Interior with seats for around 25 people

Plaque on exterior of church

Engraving on plaque is thought to read - Aleyander Friedrich von Hacke
??? August Friedrich von Hacke
1743

Until 1231 Hackpfüffel is named as imperial Peflede. Other spellings are Pefeld (1273) and Pefelde (1279). The spelling Hackinpfeffelde appeared in 1436. In 1760 the captive estate owners, brothers (Gebrüdern) von Hacke are mentioned as having a price paid to set them free. (for full story see Wikipedia).

Hacke pfüffel could possibly be translated as Hacke Fields.

Dennis with sign showing we were really there...!

Maria Dorothea Roediger married Gottlieb Andreas Schuetze and they left Hamburg, Germany in 1849 arriving in South Australia 30 August 1849 on the “Wilhelmina Maria”.

Their 3 sons, Gottlieb Wilhelm, Friedrich Eduard and Carl Friedrich came with them on the voyage to Australia.

NOTE: New information with much thanks to Günther in Germany:

Maria Dorothea (Dorothea Marie Christiane) Rödiger was the 6th child born to parents Johann Friedrich Christoph RÖDIGER and Christiane Caroline nee TORELTEN.

NOTE: Parents of Johann Friedrich Christoph RÖDIGER - Ernst Georg RÖDIGER and Johanna Magdalena Caroline KREBS.

Johann was born 10 February 1785 in Greußen. He was employed as a cabinetmaker in Hackpfüffel, Rittergut von Hacke. He died in 1841.

Johann and Christiane were married in 1806 in Hackpfüffel. She was born in 1781 and died on 23 July 1822 in Hackpfüffel. She was buried on 25 July 1822 in Hackpfüffel.

Johann & Christiane RÖDIGER had 6 children - Christian Christoph b. 1806, Johanne Henriette Sophia b. 1809, Friedrich Carl b. 1812, Maria Christiane b. 1813, Anonymous b. 1815, d. 1815, and the youngest child was our Dorothea Marie Christiane b. 1818.

Johann married again in 1823 in Hackpfüffel to Dorothee Christiane RENNSCHUH, daughter of Johann Christoph RENNSCHUH. Dorothee was employed in Hackpfüffel, Rittergut von Hacke. She died 8 May 1834 in Hackpfüffel and was buried on 10 May 1834 in Hackpfüffel.

(2) Johann Gottfried Roediger was born 30 July 1802 in Straussfurth, Thuringen, Germany.

He married Amalie Friederike Redslob, born 23 May 1799 in Germany.

Johann migrated to South Australia, arriving 30 August 1849 on the “Wilhelmina Maria”, bringing 2 of his sons, Franz Johann Edward and Carl Gustav with him.

His wife Amalie arrived in South Australia in 1850 on the “San Francisco” with daughters Johanne Wilhelmine Bertha, Clara Charlotte Auguste and Emilie Wilhelmine Pauline and another son Johann Gottfried Herman.

In 1851 their eldest son Carl August Julius who was born in Berlin on 15th September 1827 arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia on board the “Dockenhuden” on 12th February 1851.

There is quite a lot of information on this family once they were in Australia but at this stage, although they travelled on the same ship, I have nothing to connect Johann Roediger and our Maria. A clue to a connection is that her place of birth - Hackpfüffel, and that of Johann - Straussfurth, are only 42 kms apart!

Once again with many thanks to Günther in Germany, we have the name of Johann Gottfried's father - Johann Friedrich RÖDIGER
Born 1 September 1774 in Straußfurt.
I have been told by another researcher that Johann's mother's name was Elizabeth PABST.
IT DOESN'T APPEAR THEN THAT JOHAN GOTTFRIED & MARIA DOROTHEA CAN HAVE BEEN SIBLINGS...!
I still think there surely must be a connection.........!

Maria Dorothea was Dennis' Great, great grandmother and I would love to find details on her family in Hackpfüffel, Germany.

Further details on the families of both Maria AND Johann would be invaluable in either proving or disproving the connection between the 2 families.

CAN YOU HELP......?

Names, dates and information are presented with the best intentions.
Family history being what it is, although much time, effort and
money is expended, we can never know it all!

DOES ANYTHING RING A BELL??
