WILLIAM KNIGHT & ANN nee RAND

This page updated 19 February 2016

20 July 2010

The KNIGHT/RAND family first appeared as a possible connection to Sarah BRAME (convict) in 2004. This information on the birthplace, parents and marriage place and date of Sarah Brame (nee Knight) came to me as a direct result of someone reading my plea on this website.

The power of the www!

Thanks to Elaine, Julie, David and Tom for your contribution - especially Elaine for contacting me and setting in place a long and finally successful, quest to determine if Sarah Knight was indeed Sarah Brame (convict).

NOTE: The new information was very welcome and was a definite starting point in my quest for information on Sarah. I eventually managed to contact the people who provided the original new data and when nothing further could be obtained I then followed up with further research.... A few years later following countless hours at the computer, untold quantities of emails, letters and phone calls, many miles of travel, moments of despair (and elation) and restless hours considering possible options, I am finally convinced that we have been able to verify enough details to reasonably prove the connection between our Brame family and the Knight family in Essex/Hertfordshire.

It is now almost the end of 2011 and further information on the KNIGHT family has been uncovered; generations up until the late 1800's are shown further down the page - below the basic details on those who emigrated.

It seems “Down Under” appealed to members of the Knight family as it is known that some of them made their way to Australia and settled here, raising families and eventually dying many thousands of miles from home.

Details of those emigrating as far as I know (there could be others) are:

28/7/1854 - Nathan Piggott, wife Rebecca and children Frederick and Ann arrived NSW on the ship “PLANTAGANET” - origin location: Clavering, Essex, England. (Who was he you may well ask - he was a cousin of Lydia Piggot who married James Knight, son of George and Mary nee Woodcock...!)

16/4/1855 - William Piggott and wife Harriet, and children Charles, Emily and Walter on ship “ROSE OF SHARON” from London arrived Sydney. A cousin Nathan Piggott living at Canterbury. (see above)

7/8/1855 - John Knight (son of Mary's brother George and Mary nee Woodcock) and wife Sarah nee Dellow arrived Sydney, NSW 7 Aug 1855 with children Alice and Emily aboard the ship “EUPHRATES”. Sarah had a sister Mary ....? living in Sydney. No details known on Sarah's sister.

7/8/1855 - James Knight (son of Mary's brother George and Mary nee Woodcock) and wife Lydia nee Piggott arrived Sydney, NSW 7 Aug 1855 aboard ship “EUPHRATES”. Lydia had a brother William Piggott living in Sydney. (see above)

23/5/1856 - Mary and 3rd husband Edward Newman and daughter Sarah - ship “ROBERT SMALL” arrived Moreton Bay.

23/5/1856 - Louisa (daughter of Mary and her 1st husband Edward Ricketts) and Thomas Chappell with children Sarah, John, James and Eliza - ship “ROBERT SMALL” arrived Moreton Bay.

From records and index entries I have seen it appears that the Knight families who emigrated lived in NSW - Bega, Braidwood, Canterbury, Gunnedah, Mudgee, Murrurrundi and Narrabri to name just some of the known areas. No doubt through the years various descendants moved further afield.......

Although the above shows that some of our convict Sarah's family made the gigantic move from Essex. UK to NSW, Australia (voluntarily!) - sadly, nothing further has been discovered regarding her, and she is of course the main reason for the ongoing research into this family!

Maybe - one day............!

[As Edward's wife Mary nee Knight re-married in 1829 to John Tant, it is presumed that his transportation and
probable non-return to UK, was looked upon as him being "dead".
There are copies of letters from his sister Mary Ann Ginn (or poss. Giss) in Berden and a friend Daniel
Hollingsworth (from Berden and also a convict in VDL) speaking of "the woman you was living with at home was
married to John Tant and .... sorry to inform you that she died in childbed." and that "you should own that
woman as your wife when you were taken", and "the woman you once lived with is now married to John Tant of Berden,
and that the child she had by you is now dead".
On the opposite side of this evidence are letters dated 1831 where Edward Ricketts is applying for permission to
marry Sarah Ashbridge (also a convict) who is pregnant. There is mention of people stating that he has never been
married, there is also mention that he himself said he was a married man, and later he says he has never been
married. No evidence has been found to support his marrying Sarah Ashbridge; she came on the "Melish" her daughter

Quite a lot of research has been done on the descendants of some of the children of William Knight and Ann nee Rand.

Apart from the above Descendant List I have now added information on Mary, and the families of her three marriages. There are also pages on the Ricketts family of Berden, Clavering and Rickling.

The relevant pages can be accessed by clicking on the highlighted links above or directly from the Ricketts link on the Home Page.

Click here to go to the page dealing with William Braham/Brame and his 2nd wife Sarah nee Knight who by her connection as step-mother to his two daughters, is in our direct line.

Names, dates and information are presented with the best intentions.
Family history being what it is, although much time, effort and
money is expended, we can never know it all!
