MCSHEEHY

JOHN MC SHEEHY

Born Ireland

Information on the McSheehy Clan shows that they were Gallowglass (the martial class of Gaelic Ireland) for the Earl of Munster from about 1460 until the last Earl was killed around 1580.

They occupied Castles all over Munster but it appears that they were landowners also. Argument has been made that they were not typical Gallowglass, that they were respectable Irish families, only Gallowglass in their origin. There is much information available on the early, strife ridden years of the 16th century - “they were drawn from the best fighters in the Hebrides, mostly MacDonalds but also including MacRorys, MacSwineys (or McSweeneys), MacSheehys, MacDowells.....”. The Gallowglass are an active organisation and this came from their website. (This information was passed on by a fellow McSheehy researcher).

Patrick McSheehy and his wife Deborah (Gobinette) nee Sheehan and their daughter Ellen Agnes arrived in Australia in 1840 (from 1841 Census SA - Patrick *SHEEHY* - Thebarton - 1 male & 1 female under 35, 1 female under 7. Family arrived “Mary Dugdale” from Bristol via Dublin 1 Oct 1840.) Patrick was sick when landed and is shown on Return of Sick & Destitute emigrants.

History proves that he recovered and went on to practise his profession as a bootmaker. The family appears to have lived in Victoria for a couple of years, from there they went to Adelaide until approximately 1855 when they relocated to Sandy Creek (in the Barossa Valley) for the years 1856 to 1870.

They then moved to Mt Gambier in the SE of South Australia where they lived until the death of Deborah in 1876. At this time Patrick went to live at Sandford, Vic. with his son where he stayed until his death in 1894.

Deborah is buried in the Lake Terrace Cemetery, Mt Gambier, SA while Patrick's final resting place is in the Sandford cemetery, Victoria.
