Cemetery, Mt Gambier, South Australia m. (2) William Loader Stearman b. Bendigo, Vic. m. 3 Oct 1896 C of E Church, Casterton, Vic. NOTE: while there is a documented Vicorian Marriage Certificate where W L Stearman states he is a widower - 1893 - in fact he was still married to his wife Eliza GARBEET (GARBUTT),(she died 1901 Vic. Reg.no 9697). Virtue must have dscovered that William was still married and In 1897 she took him to court. He was charged at the Hamilton Court with bigamy despite protesting that he hadn't seen his wife for 6 years and believed her to be dead. He was sentenced to 12 years hard labour in Ballarat Gaol where he died 14th November that same year. NOTE: from Trove newspaper Fri 9 Apr 1897 "A letter dated 22nd March last from prisoner to Virtue Farrow stated that he was sorry to inform her he had never been divorced from his wife, who was living at Footscray, and that she might put the matter in the hands of the police, as he didn't care whether he were dead or alive". He was arrested 31 March and committed for trial at Hamilton, 27th April. NOTE: from Trove - Hamilton Spectator (Vic. : 1870 - 1918), Saturday 10 April 1897, page 4 CASTERTON COURT ; OF PETTY SESSIONS. Thursday, April 8. (Before Messrs.. J. H. Jackson, Miller, Peachy and Mitchell, J'Ps.P.) : BIGAMY William Loader Stearman, labourer, was ac-cused of the above offence. Superintendent Walshe, who conducted the prosecution, said that the charge was that accused married Virtue Farrow, a widow at Casterton, on the 3rd of October last year, being already married and his wife still living. The prisoner had ad mitted the offence. Charles Wm. Thompson, an officer attached to the Criminal Investigation Department, deposed that on the 6th April he had an interview with accused and his wife, Mrs. Stearman nee Eliza Garbutt, now in court, both being present. Prisoner acknowledged that she was his wife, and that he was married to her on the 12th February, 1883, by the Rev. Mr. Yeo. Witness produced a marriage certificate from the Government Statist showing that William Leader Steerman and Eliza Garbutt were mar ried on the 12th Febtnary. 1883, by Henry Yeo, Bible Christian minister, in Melbourne. Exe-cuted the warrant of arrest on the 31st March in Melbourne, charging prisoner with bigamy. Eliza Steerman, wife of the prisoner, a very prepossessing young woman, handed in her cer-certificate of marriage, but was not examined. Viriue Farrow, a good looking young widow, deposed that she made the acquaintance of the accused about last August. Was married to him by the Rev. J. A. Ball at Casterton on the 3rd October,1896, and produced her certificate of marriage. Rev. J. A. Ball, Vicar of Christ Church, gave evidence as to celebrating the marriage on the 3rd October, 1896, between the accused and Virtue Farrow, Superintendent Walshe said that the information had been sworn by prosecutrix, owing to a letter received by her from the accused from Melbourne, which read as follows "Dear Virtue,I now take the pleasure of writing a few lines to you, hoping they will find you in the best of health, as it leaves me at present. When I left I went to Coleraine, bnt could not get any work. I was three days in getting there, and from there I went to Hamilton, and called at a station and got a pound from the manager, which took me down to Melbourne, and I have been in the hospital ever since. I came out to-day (Friday). I am sorry to inform you that that I was never divorced from my wife, and she is living at Footscray, so you can put it in the hands of the police and have me arrested as soon as you like, as I don't care whether I am dead or alive, so I don't care how things go, so good-bye for the present. From your - deceitful friend W. STEARMAN. You will get her address by writing to Joseph Armstrong, Desication Works, North Melbourne." The prisoner, who asked no questions and had nothing to say in his defence, was committed to trial at Hamilton Supreme Court on the 27th inst. d. __ __ 1897 m.
