Detail from the book "100 LIVES" follows:
"A simple timber cross marks the grave of Trooper Arthur Hudson. As a young man Louth born Arthur worked at the Dunlop Wool Scour under the direction of his father who was the engineer. At the outbreak of WWI he enlisted in the Australian Infantry Force and served in the Light Horse in Egypt and in Gallipoli. He was in the second machine gun squadron of the ANZAC forces. Between the 25 April 1915 and and 16 December in the same year 27,000 men were killed or wounded at Gallipoli and the ANZAC tradition began. Arthur was one of the wounded at Gallipoli but he didn't return to Louth until 1919. Here he married Augustine Mathews, daughter of Bill Mathews and granddaughter of the famous coach owner and driver TA Mathews of Louth. Later Arthur and Augustine moved to Bourke where they lived at 'Lynwood', 2 Tudor Street.

Here they raised a family of three sons, Bill, Arthur and Ray, and a daughter Violet. Their house was formerly the house of Captain Brown
(owner of "THE NILE"). At Bourke Arthur worked for some time for the Department of Public Works. He died in 1940, and his wife and sons lived on in the house for many decades." (This excerpt states that references are from various volumes of HISTORY OF BOURKE).

His Obituary states that he was a keen amateur boxer and at one time fought Johnny Shields in a local contest; his talks on boxing were always of interest. He was an enthusiastic member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, passing through the chairs, and rising to the rank of Past District Grand Master and representing Bourke branch at a Sydney Conference. The local RSL branch was also enriched by his efforts up to the time of his illness.

In "The Western Herald" 25 August, 1994 Gussie said "Arthur fought in the war and was wounded twice, he was badly hurt. We had some wonderful times together, though, and I loved him very much. He had problems with his heart and for the last two years together, I nursed him and looked after him. I still miss him a great deal".

Augusta Hudson widow of Arthur William, died the year following the newspaper article - she was buried 11 Oct 1995 in the Old Cemetery, Bourke, NSW.
